Egg hunts date back to the early 1700s, when the Pennsylvania Dutch believed in an egg-laying rabbit called Oschter Haws Because this rabbit laid eggs in the grass, children were encouraged to build nests for it to lay in and to search for the eggs it left behind . Oschter Haws over time eventually became the Easter Bunny, who isn’t known for its egg-laying capabilities, but the tradition of creating nests or baskets which we now line with artificial grass these days, and searching for his presents stuck around.
